Carte Blanche is launching two new investigative journalism series on M-Net this month: Carte Blanche Medical and Carte Blanche Consumer.
The purpose of the Carte Blanche Consumer series is to educate and inform South African consumers about their rights as well as to entertain them. It will assume the role of a consumer rights watchdog that demands accountability and exposes hidden agendas.
In a Media Update article, Executive Producer Astrid Ascar says, “It will give [viewers] a voice and champion their rights as citizens, taxpayers and consumers, and it comes at just the right time from M-Net because of course the new Consumer Protection Act comes into effect in South Africa in 2010.”
The weekly Consumer programme will be produced by the same team that has guided Carte Blanche through the past 21 years and will be hosted by Devi Sankaree. She will be joined by co-presenters Derek Watts, Bongani Bingwa and Annika Larsen. Click here to read more about each of these presenters.
In a recent TVSA interview about the new programme, Devi says,
"We’ll be covering smaller issues like travel insurance and holiday clubs and also the bigger issues. For example, on the Monday medical slot, this show would do medical aid issues but if a medical story has a stronger consumer bent [sic] to it then it will be on the consumer show instead.
Another example of a story about a bigger issue is a make or model of vehicle that's considered to be problematic on the road and has resulted in deaths."
