The
Department of Energy says that motorists may be able to pay for petrol and diesel with their credit cards in the near future.
This will only come about if the public give positive feedback to the draft regulation that has been posted on the Department’s website. The Department wants to transform the way that consumers pay for petrol by allowing them to pay with a credit, debit or hybrid card, or with cash if they prefer. This will see the end of petrol and garage cards, as reported on IOL.
• Petrol stations will become safer environments as less cash will be handled, which should reduce the risk of robberies.
• Consumers will not have to carry large amounts of cash around with them.
• Consumers will not have to pay bank charges as they will not have to draw cash every time they want to buy petrol.
This impending change ties in with the need for increased safety later this year and in 2010, when South Africa hosts the Confederations Cup and Soccer World Cup. According to Fin24.com, thousands of tourists will be visiting the country next year and will hopefully be able to travel freely and safely.
Comments can be sent in writing to the Department until 30 May 2009. To view the draft regulation and contact details for the Department, please click here.
