WirelessG announces that in-flight, high speed internet will be available in sub-Saharan Africa in the next couple of months.
According to an article on
Tech Central, the technology still requires Civil Aviation Authority (
CAA) approval, but Internet provider WirelessG is confident of getting the go-ahead soon to begin offering the service on both local and long-haul flights, says CEO Carel van der Merwe.
.
This satellite based, in-flight broadband system will be provided through an exclusive agreement with US-based Row 44, who is already successfully offering in-flight Wi-Fi Internet to Southwest Airlines, Alaska Airlines and in 2010, through Norwegian Air Shuttle.
.
The in-flight Wi-Fi will be available to all passengers on participating flights for a fee, while
G-Connect users can benefit from the service as they will be able to use their current G-Connect accounts on flights. It is not clear how much this will cost, or which airlines will have it on offer at this stage.
