SA Retail Council to be collective voice for retailers

23 April 2010

The South African Retail Council (SARC) was officially launched on 20 April 2010.

This has stemmed from a merger between the Furniture Traders Association (FTA) and the Consumer Goods Council of South Africa (CGCSA). The creation of this new council will benefit both large and small retailers, and membership is open to all retailers in South Africa.

As a body within the CGCSA, the SARC will strengthen the retailer’s voice and position in the industry by addressing various issues facing the entire retail sector. The council looks to address issues of a non-competitive nature, focusing on two specific areas affecting the industry: economic and legislative affairs, and labour relations.

In a recent media statement, CGCSA CEO, Mncane Mthunzi said “This merger will go a long way to ensuring a single voice that will represent and facilitate matters on behalf of retail industry.”

It is great to know that we as consumers will now have one port of call to go to when facing difficulties with retailers. Only time will tell how effectively the SARC will be able to assist consumers.
