Telkom is rethinking their
mobile strategy in order to compensate for the decline in fixed line voice revenue they have experienced over the past financial year.
Set to become the next mobile operator to hit SA, Telkom’s mobile service will launch sometime this year, although a specific date is yet to be determined.
With the competitive nature of the mobile market, CEO Reuben September from Telkom believe that they have a “
competitive advantage” by utilizing their already established business and customer database. Upon entering the market Telkom’s guiding principles will be “simplicity, quality and value”.
MTN and Telkom have already signed a domestic roaming agreement, whereby Telkom will be using MTN’s network to offer prepaid, postpaid and hybrid voice and data products that will be carried on the 2G and 3G voice and data networks.
Telkom has also ordered 2 000 base stations which are currently being constructed. Telkom plans to spend a total of R6 billion over the next five years building their network.
It will be fascinating to see how Telkom goes about making a success of their new venture in this competitive market.
