Zuma launches National Population Registration Campaign

25 March 2010

President Jacob Zuma, alongside Home Affairs Minister Dr Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma, officially launched the National Population Registration Campaign on 23 March 2010 in Libode, Eastern Cape. The campaign aims to speed up service delivery and to see that all citizens are registered with the Department of Home affairs within a year.

The objectives of the campaign are to:
  • eradicate late registrations of births
  • ensure that new-born babies are registered within 30 days of birth
  • ensure that all South Africans who turn 15 years old, or are already older than 15, receive their Identity Documents (IDs).

In a Daily Dispatch Online article, the Minister released a statement saying that “Through this massive registration drive, we aim to reach our ultimate objective to... ensure the integrity of the National Population Register, South Africa’s most important database of citizen information.”

It will be interesting to see whether this campaign will effect positive change and improve service delivery.
