Crime Line allows the public to make anonymous tip offs about crimes and criminals by sending a R1 SMS to 32211. Since June 2007 the initiative has netted over 370 suspects for crimes ranging from petty theft to armed robbery and murder. According to the Cape Argus, the Security Association of South Africa (SASA) President Jenny Reid said that Crime Line was making a “real difference in the fight against crime”.
Crime Line is an initiative developed by the Primedia group in collaboration with the South African Police Service. The police have guaranteed that the tipster will not be contacted and that their identity will remain anonymous. Tip-offs should be as specific as possible by providing names, addresses and descriptions.
