South Africa’s efforts to clamp down on smoking have been recognised by the World Health Organisation (WHO) in its most recent global tobacco report. According to an article in the Cape Times, the WHO gives South Africa 7 out of 10 for enforcement of bans on advertising, promoting and sponsorship of tobacco, but a lower rating of 5 out of 10 for its measures to protect people from tobacco smoke through smoke-free environments. Smoke-free zones have always been controversial: is this the direction that South Africa should be taking?

I feel pretty strongly about this sort of thing. Smokers need to bear in mind that they can always smoke somewhere else. Non-smokers take in second-hand smoke just by being in the same space.
