Freedom Day commemorates the first democratic elections held in South Africa on 27 April 1994. The day serves as a reminder for us all to be proactive by standing up for, and realising our rights as citizens and consumers.
Five Tables of Peace gatherings will take place simultaneously around the country on Sunday. The venues are Unity Town Square in Polokwane, the Botanical Gardens in Durban, the harbour in Port Elizabeth, the Union Buildings in Pretoria and Table Mountain in Cape Town.
The concept of the Table of Peace and Unity was developed in 1999 when 450 South Africans lunched together at one long table on the magnificent slopes of Table Mountain. The aim was to show that a unified people have the power to heal a nation. The Table of Peace and Unity has become a way in which South Africans celebrate their desire for a united and peaceful future, while raising money for a good cause in the process.
To date the initiative has raised over R5 million for the purchase of equipment including mobile ventilators, vehicles and cottages for the housing of abused children. Click here for more information about the Table of Peace and Unity.
