The Consumer Protection Bill was finally signed into law on 24 April 2009 by President Motlanthe. This is definitely worth getting excited about because it means that all South African consumers will be better protected and empowered to realise their rights.

For example you will legally be able to cancel contracts if you are not happy with the terms. Suppliers will not be able to automatically renew contacts either. The first thing that springs to mind with this example is how much easier it will be to change cell phone providers. Hopefully this will have a positive effect on customer service as suppliers will need to be on top of their game to retain their customers.

However you need to be aware of the fact that the Act will only be implemented in 18 months time. This is to allow businesses enough time to revise and adjust their trading policies to comply with it.
