What you need to know about the Long-term Insurance Ombud’s Office:

  • It provides out-of-court resolution of disputes between complainants and insurers fairly, quickly and informally.
  • This service is free for consumers.
  • Rulings are legally binding on insurers.

The Office has just released their latest annual report. Here are a couple of interesting stats.  In 2008:

  • 8 290 complaints received by the LTI Ombud’s Office.
  • (This is a 4.6% from 2007)
  • 87% of complaints were finalised within six months.
  • 44% of claims were resolved wholly or partially in favour of consumers.
  • The office recovered more than R72 million in benefits for consumers.
