Not only do consumers have to pay more for their food, electricity and petrol; the price of parking also went up in Cape Town as of 1 July.
Below is a table taken from the City Improvement District website with regard to the parking tariffs for 2009 and 2010:

According to the City of Cape Town, the reason for the increase in prices is due to the limited number of bays available in and around the city. The increased tariff is linked to a maximum parking period to ensure that there are always parking bays available.
Interesting, Cape Town is named South Africa’s most expensive city for parking. An article on Moneyweb reports that monthly car parking in the Cape Town CBD costs R1077, compared to R580 in Johannesburg, R740 in Pretoria and R661 in Durban.
The increase in parking tariffs surely means that commuters will find alternative ways of traveling around town. What is the cheapest way to travel, any suggestions?
