South Africa’s law on smoking was recently amended, and are becoming stricter as they continue to prohibit smoking in certain areas.

The Tobacco Products Control Amendment Act, No. 23 of 2007, recently approved by President Jacob Zuma, aims to control smoking in public places, such as restaurants, pubs and bars, and reduce the amount of smoking which occurs in the presence of children.

If a smoker is caught lighting up their cigarette and breaking any of the new rules, they can be fined up to R500. Owners of restaurants, pubs and bars can potentially be fined up to R50000 if a smoker is caught breaching the law on their premises.
