In October 2007, Collect-a-Can made a Guinness World Record of collecting the most steel cans in one month. Almost two million steel cans were collected. According to Mathabo Phomane, PR and marketing manager for Collect-a-Can,  they are determined to break their own record this year.

The media partner for the initiative, MySchool, is calling on all schools to register at their nearest Collect-a-Can branch. The schools get paid for the cans they collect and can stand a chance to win prizes sponsored by Pan Macmillan. This is a great initiative to get young people engaged in recycling. 70% of all used cans manufactured in Southern Africa are currently being recycled.

“It is important to make school competitions fun, yet educational as learners need to form healthy, environmentally friendly habits from an early age. Looking after the environment needs to become second nature. If we can educate children and instil the importance of healthy environmental practices they will be able to take this knowledge home with them,” concludes Phomane.

Rocking the Daisies, South Africa’s first carbon-neutral music festival, achieved carbon-neutral status for the first time and this year will do the same thanks to the use of environmentally friendly practices and products. The festival’s motto is: play hard, tread lightly.
