According to a recent article on Bizcommunity, many South African domain names are at risk because their domain registration details are incorrect.

Why this is a problem:
If your listed email address is wrong, you will be excluded from any form of control of the domain and will not receive your billing invoice (resulting in your site going down if you miss the payment deadline).

How to check your details:
The good news is that there is a quick and easy way to check your details: simply go to http://co.za/ and click on the Whois (Registration Details) link under Registration Information. Once you have entered your domain name and clicked enter you will be able to check all the details.

Useful Tips:

  • Make sure that your correct business or personal name is recorded next to ‘Registrant’ as this is the legal owner of the domain. (If it has the name of a service provider or an IT person then he or she owns the domain.)
  • At least one of the listed email addresses must belong to you or your organisation as all conversations about the domain are directed to these addresses.
  • Avoid using a specific person’s email address such as john@xxx.ca.za in case that person is on leave when an important email comes through, or leaves the organisation. Rather use something like domains@xxx.co.za.
  • It is a good idea to use another domain (such as Gmail or Hotmail) for one of the mail addresses as a back up.
