Vodacom’s the Grid, South Africa’s only location based mobile social network, has partnered up with e.tv to show the mood of the country after the weather report on the Sunrise morning show (weekdays from 6am to 8am).

The Grid subscribers can now set their mood to either ‘happy’ or ‘sad’ and a Mood Map will be created based on this data. The Mood Map will look similar to a weather map. Read more on memeburn.com

It will be interesting to see how this initiative progresses in the future. Will it take off and become a regular feature across all channels? Will it be used to collect meaningful data for companies and their brands?

If this idea was taken a step further it could be used to run specific polls to find out how loyal consumers are to a brand, or how happy they are with the level of customer service. For example the Mood Map could indicate that for Company X, 65% of Gauteng residents are happy with the level of customer service, but only 40% of Western Cape residents are happy with it today.
