According to a New York Times article, various news sites, including the Washington Post, are considering whether to continue their existing policy of allowing readers to post comments anonymously.
Since its inception, the internet has allowed people to view and comment on articles and blog posts without having to disclose their identity in any way, and this is still the way the much of the web world works today.
The increase in user generated content has resulted in many consumers hiding their identities behind their comments. Arianna Huffington, a founder of The Huffington Post says: “Anonymity is just the way things are done. It’s an accepted part of the Internet, but there’s no question that people hide behind anonymity to make vile or controversial comments,”
