On the show this week, the Carte Blanche Consumer team will investigate companies that pull the wool over their customers’ eyes, and how they get away with it.

Empty Mail Orders

Mail order catalogues contain a list of general merchandise that can be ordered by post. So why on earth do they entice consumers to enter draws for large sums of cash? Pensioner Marcus Knocker was delighted at the prospect of a sudden windfall when he was told he could win more than R100 000. Carte Blanche Consumer finds out who is behind these misleading “offers”. Presenter: Chantal Rutter; Producer: Bernadette Cook.

Laptop louts

PC giving you trouble? Surely your local repair shop can be trusted to give you an honest assessment of the problem. Well, not always. Carte Blanche Consumer created a simple, easily detectable fault and asked several computer repair shops what the problem was. Our hidden cameras watched the technicians at work.  Presenter: Bongani Bingwa; Producer: Nguni Productions.Matching Quotes

Most large retailers promise to price-match or better any written quotes on items like stoves or fridges. But is this true or merely a clever marketing strategy? Carte Blanche Consumer shopped around for appliances to find out which retailers are willing to do some good old-fashioned bargaining. Producer: Hayley Horan.
