We all would love to do out bit to help society, by donating time and/or money, but with our lives being as busy and chaotic as they are, it is often difficult to find the time to do these good deeds.

Social media has now made interacting with people so much easier and it allows us to reach out and help others without using as much of our time. So with this in mind, iPhone have developed some interesting apps that will help alleviate the plight of poverty around the world.

Below is a brief description of five apps that help fight poverty (more detailed information can be found on mashable.com):

  • Make Poverty History – an app with a white band which can be used as a background and has the words “make poverty history” written on it can be downloaded for only $0.99. All the proceeds will be donated to Make Poverty History, a movement that was created to help eradicate poverty around the world.
  • Give Work – this free app, which was initially designed for refugees in the developing world, allows one to supply work to someone else. “In effect, every time you complete a task, you support a refugee in two ways — by generating income that goes to their digital training, and your task’s accuracy scores help develop and design training programs for the future. The points you create with each task can be traded in by refugees.”
  • Compassion – Compassion International provides information about poverty stricken children and allows you to sponsor a child, either from Africa, Asia Central and South America. If you prefer to offer a donation you can do that too and it will be given to the Disaster Relief Fund.
  • CauseWorld – when arriving at a particular store or rather ‘checking in’ using this geolocation app, you will be rewarded with karma points. These points can then be cashed-in and paid to charities, such as Fight Poverty in Africa, Prevent Child Abuse and many more deserving causes.
  • Donation Connect – to use this particular app, once downloaded, select the “Find a charity” option. You will now being able to easily donate money to the charity of your choice, the money will be deducted either from your bill or your prepaid airtime balance. It couldn’t be easier!

With the help of social media, it is now easier to give back. So, no more excuses do your bit to alleviate poverty and help make a difference in the world.  Let us know if you know of any South African charities that are using social media so that we can spread the word for them too.
