Dear getclosure fan
With just 28 days to go until the FIFA World Cup, we’ve put together a couple of practical tips to equip you to deal with the influx of visitors, avoid the mayhem on match days and get kitted out in green and gold paraphernalia.
If you are out and about over the next month or two, chances are that you’ll come across a lost or befuddled tourist at some point! Take two minutes out of your day to point them in the right direction, steer them towards the nearest tourism or information office, or give them the National Tourism Information number (083 123 2345).
In terms of getting around, make sure you have an up-to-date list of all road closures if you live near one of the World Cup Stadiums or Fan Parks. Some roads will be closed or have restricted access for the duration of the tournament, and others will only be closed on match days. Visit www.2010wordcupsa.com for lists and detailed maps of the scheduled road closures in each city. If you are using public transport, call the 24/7 public transport call centre on 0800 656 463 to find out whether your regular route will be interrupted and if so, what alternatives are available.
If you’re attending any games, planning to frequent the Fan Parks, or just want to be part of the festivities, make sure that you ‘Fly the Flag’ for South Africa, literally, and by wearing World Cup shirts, makarapa helmets, blowing your vuvuzelas, learning the Diski Dance (master the moves by watching the video clips on SouthAfrica.info) and adding Mzansi Fan Flags to the side mirrors on your car. Be aware of price discrepancies for each of these items, as some may be fakes.
